What should be the sound of today's big band music with vocals? Six singers from five German cities gathered together in order to find individual answers to this question. They explore the use of vocals as a genuinely incorporated part in the texture of a big band.
Based on the fact that traditional as well as contemporary big band literature holds few examples giving the voice an equal instrumental role, Sung Sound is setting a framework for seven singers from all across Germany to compose pieces for big band and vocals considering these thoughts and to perform their own pieces alongside a contemporary jazz-orchestra. They embark on a sound search: the voice is doubling horn lines, developing vocal percussion grooves, it is integrated into polyphonic passages, creating noisy textures; they explore ways in which language can be incorporated without creating a lead accompaniment situation – just to mention a few starting points. The singers/composers from Hanover, Cologne, Osnabrück, Dresden and Berlin wrote or arranged and perform pieces for big band and vocals, focusing on the novel use of vocals in a contemporary large ensemble....
